Is there any more uplifting experience to be had in York than to attend Evensong at the Minster around Easter time? You can go for the music, for the spiritual experience (whether you consider yourself a religious person or not) for the ceremony, barely altered since the Reformation. Or you can go for the light. The combination of low sun and lengthening evenings bathes everything in supernatural gold as if the stones themselves are glowing. It's not hard to imagine how medieval worshippers would have believed this place housed a premonition of heaven.
